During the month of May, early works of Arthur Wicks are being exhibited in the Riverina area, including Temora, under the title of MINING THE ARCHIVE.
Arthur Wicks is a celebrated multimedia artist known for his work both in Australia and internationally. With a rich history of national and exhibitions and performances abroad, Wicks has showcased his diverse talents in prints, sculptures, video, installations, and live performances across Australia, New Zealand, America, and Europe - with over 170 solo or group shows and counting! His collections are held in places such as the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris, and the National Gallery of Australia.
At the Temora Art Centre, for a limited time, you can visit part of Wick’s Art Trail for free.
“Our Art Centre will host two large scale global images from the Notes from the Solstice Voyeur series, together with a group of six digital images from the Premonitions of Conflict series, and Still Life with Subconscious Intrusions series,” said Mayor Rick Firman.
Originally trained as a scientist, Arthur Wicks completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Sydney, followed by a Diploma of Education in 1958 and Bachelor of Arts with the Australian National University. His art career took off with his first solo exhibition in 1966 held at Nundah Galleries in Canberra.
Driven by an enduring curiosity about the paradoxes of contemporary life, technology, globalisation, and the politics of the times. During the 1960s Arthur Wicks produced paintings, sculptures and screen prints engaging with the issues of technology, globalisation and warfare.
Arthur Wicks was awarded a French Government Scholarship in 1967 to study printmaking with renowned British printmaker Stanley Hayter at his studio in Paris. From then on Wicks travelled, worked, performed, and exhibited in many countries around Europe. He returned to Australia in the mid-1980s and continued to produce art and exhibit in galleries in major cities and regional areas, now residing in Wagga.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our Temora Shire community and visitors to see work from world renowned artist, Arthur Wicks, from our back doorstep; and if you haven’t visited our Art Centre, this is reason enough!” concluded Mayor Firman.
Exhibition: Monday - Friday (10am – 2pm), 6 May – 14 June 2024, and (11am – 2pm) Saturday 1st June.
