Athletics upgrades - request update
In the December 2023 Council meeting, Council heard that the Temora Athletics Club had requested changes to the layout for the upgrades at Nixon Park. Councillors resolved to approve Temora Athletic Club request, in principle, following consultation with Temora Aussie Rules Football and Netball Club and Temora and District Sport Council.
The layout changes included the following:
- Remove the shotput landing area away from traffic both passing and parked.
- Improve the drainage of the shotput area which currently gets water from the car park upstream.
- Locate the shot-put area closer to their storage/spectator areas improving setup and viewing.
In relation to the layout changes, the proposal was found to have minor impact on the operations of the Temora Australian Football and Netball Club (TAFNC) who use this area as a car park for netball training and potentially for vehicle access, if required.
Council staff have confirmed that the proposed layout will accommodate a vehicle needing to access the netball courts. This access would not be sealed and would pass over the grassed area at the front of the shotput facility. It is also apparent that there is access available on the northern side of the main amenities building.
After further investigation by Council, it was proposed to Councillors that the carpark be relocated further south (mid-way down the long-jump runup), and the shot-put areas and shipping container move to the south of the netball court.
Cr Anthony Irvine commented that “it is a credit to the clubs at how well they get on” co-existing at Nixon Park. Cr Irvine noted that “every inch of Nixon Park is being utilised, and could be approaching it’s full mark.”
The resolution was that Council approve the amended layout subject to the consideration of the Temora and District Sports Council. The resolution was moved by Cr Belinda Bushell and seconded by Cr Jason Goode.
