Bush Bucks

Bush Bucks

How Bush Bucks Works

Last modified: November 23, 2007 - 10:53 AM

At last its here, the Bush Bucks concept is based on some simple assumptions:

  • Local people support local businesses as long as the prices are fiar;
  • Most residents have ties outside the shire, which can be used to encourage more money into the district, for example, by having friends or family visit Temora
  • Local Businesses employ local people;
  • Population must be maintained, because loss of residents leads to fewer services;
  • Fewer services means people move away, creating a vicious circle for population decline, which also makes it hard to attract new residents;
  • Rural communities fade away if they lose population and services.

In devising a scheme different from any old 'shop local' campaign, a fresh new approach is being attempted.

Firstly the scheme is not a bid for charity from local residents or the outside world. Residents are not being asked to spend more money but, rather, to try to spend it in Temora where possible. The scheme is also different in that it is simple, positive and proactive. anyone can support the campaign by using existing networks outside the district - family, friends, affiliated clubs - to encourage more money to flow into the shire from outside.

In the process, it is also hoped the scheme will strengthen relationships between city and country. One of the keys to the scheme will be the release of special 'Bush Bucks' vouchers, which may only be redeemed in Temora.

Local printing firm JA Bradley and Son, publishers of the Temora Independent, is a proud supporter of the campaign and will print the vouchers. Each will have a unique serial number and be embossed with Temora Shire Council's municipal seal, to guarantee authenticity.

Council and Temora Business Enterprise Group (TBEG) the creators of the scheme have put up $3,000 to kick off the campaign, and the Department of State and Regional Development has since matched the amount.

As a result, there is no cost to local businesses wanting to register as supporters of the scheme. Participating businesses will be given books of Bush Bucks vouchers, posters, brochures and other promotional material.

Residents will be able to buy Bush Bucks - for any amount - from participating businesses, using case, credit cards or by cheque.

They spend the vouchers locally, either at the business where it was purchased, or at another participating shop. Bush Bucks may be given away, either to other residents, or to friends and family in the city to bring to Temora and spend locally.

It is also planned for city residents to be able to participate, by ordering Bush Bucks online or voer the telephone using a credit card, after which thy can be spent in Temora.
