The Government Gazette of 24 December 1891 proclaimed the constitution of Temora's first local government authority, the Borough of Temora. The first election of borough council members was held on 5 March 1892.
Local Government in the rural area surrounding Temora was introduced in 1906 with the constitution of the Narraburra Shire Council, which held its first meeting on 13 June 1906.
In 1980 State legislation required the compulsory amalgamation of the Temora Municipal council and Narraburra Shire Council to form the Temora Shire Council, which came into existence on 1 January 1981.
